In response to the recent shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, many professional athletes used their position on the national stage to both support the students and shine a light on the importance of political issues surrounding the shooting.

Anthony Rizzo, Dwyane Wade, and Roberto Luongo were among the athletes whose responses made the national spotlight as they aimed to promote change in our country.

Rizzo, the Chicago Cubs first baseman and MSDHS graduate, made an appearance at the school and gave a heartfelt speech that left all sad, but inspired.

Wade, a shooting guard on the Miami Heat, made a surprise appearance at Marjory Stoneman in an attempt to lift spirits and let all the students know that the state of Florida is behind them.

Finally, Luongo, the goalie for the Florida Panthers, gave an emotional speech on national television in response to the shooting. He has lived in Parkland for the last 10 years and his young children go to nearby schools in the same district, so this event really hit home for the Luongo Family. He commended the students, saying, “You guys are brave. You are an inspiration to all of us. At the end of the day, you guys are what gives us hope for the future.” He also called on the lawmakers of our country, stating, “Enough is enough. We gotta take action.”
