NBC’s Questionable Grinch Pick

For the last few years, NBC has produced musicals that are broadcast live. Most, if not all, have been met with some pretty harsh criticism (rightfully so, in my humble opinion). From casting Carrie Underwood in The Sound of Music to cancelling a production of Hair, the NBC live shows (and their casting choices) are just objectively bad. Recently, however, NBC has truly outdone itself announcing the production of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch. And if that doesn’t sound bad enough, NBC has also decided to cast Matthew Morrison as The Grinch. You may know him as Mr. Shuester from Glee, where he blessed our eyes and ears with some of the most uncomfortable singing and dancing performances of just about every song under the sun. I think it is bold of NBC to think they can cast him as The Grinch and put him up against Jim Carrey’s portrayal of The Grinch in one of the best movies of our generation: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000). Since everything about the movie version is god tier—including the entire cast and soundtrack— I just feel that it is unnecessary to make another version, let alone make it even worse. Needless to say, I will probably still most likely watch The Grinch: Live when it premieres on December 9.
