October Baseball is Almost Here

The MLB is now entering the final games of the season, and the race for the playoffs is getting exciting. The Marlins, Reds, Giants, Diamondbacks, Cubs, Blue Jays, Mariners, Astros, and Rangers are all hunting for three wildcard spots, two for the American League and one for the National League. In the American League, the Mariners and Astros are currently tied for the lead of the division, with the Rangers a half game back. As of right now, the first team out is the Blue Jays; however, they have a very light end of the season which increases their odds by playing five out of eight series against teams below a .500 win percentage.

In September, the Mariners have the hardest schedule as they are only playing three series against teams below .500. The players to watch in the American League playoffs right now are Adley Rutschman (C) and Gunnar Henderson (SS/3B) of the Orioles; Randy Arozarena (LF) and Zach Eflin (P) of the Rays; Josh Jung (3B), Corey Seager (SS), and Marcus Semien (2B) of the Rangers; as well as Jose Altuve (2B) of the Astros. Their combination of excitement, talent, and potential make them some of the best players to watch right now. The Orioles seem to be the team to beat in the American League right now.

Wyatt Buquid, an avid Cubs fan, said, “If I had to pick a World Series winner today, I’m thinking of the Orioles just because I believe in their team.”

If there was any team meant to challenge the Baltimore Orioles from the National League, it would be the Atlanta Braves. The Braves are boasting the best record in the MLB, Ronald Acuña (OF)  has emerged as a favorite for the MVP, and the Braves have finally seemed to fix their pitching issues. The only challenger from the National League appears to be the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are leading their division by a commanding 14 games. The Phillies and Cubs are on their own hot streaks, seemingly securing their spots in the wild card. Buquid is already looking ahead to the playoffs as was evidenced when he said, “I think the Cubs should stay in the fight and try to earn a playoff spot. Heading into the postseason, I have my eyes on Seiya Suzuki and Cody Bellinger.” Buquid is, however, doubtful of their abilities against teams like the Dodgers and Phillies.

It is good for young teams like the Cubs, Diamondbacks, and Reds to get the experience, even if they make a first round exit. That is why these teams need to enter the postseason, no matter how difficult it may be. The players to watch from the National League seem to be Mookie Betts(OF) of the Dodgers; Bryce Harper(1B) of the Phillies; Corbin Carroll(OF) of the Diamondbacks; and Elly De La Cruz of the Reds. If each of these players’ respective teams do well, the players must step up and play at another level. If one thing is for certain, this race will be exciting.
