They came for the snacks, stayed for the sisterhood, and left with a little more wisdom than before. On February 7th, VOW hosted its Girls Night In, bringing together around 30 girls in Foglia Library to celebrate femininity and the pride of being a woman. The night kicked off with icebreakers, featuring laughter-filled attempts to untangle a human knot. A short trip to the Beigel Room led to an assortment of snacks and an inviting space for the girls to connect and get to know each other better.
The girls were then invited back to Foglia library for a panel discussion led by female teachers. They offered an empowering as well as an insightful conversation. The panelists shared their own reflections on what womanhood means to them, personal experiences, and an overall discussion of how it is to work amongst men, sharing both triumphs and setbacks. They also provided a distinct perspective on how they see female students interact in the classroom. The panelists shared how it is important, as educators, to empower female voices and uplift them. This discussion left the audience feeling very inspired and even encouraged some students to share their voices. It left everyone feeling a deeper appreciation and connection for the women who guide them on a daily basis.
After that, the girls participated in an instructor-led yoga class. Though it was challenging at times, the class was very grounding and allowed for everyone to release their stress and tension while also focusing on mindfulness. There was a strong emphasis on creating a calm and safe ambiance. The instructor talked through the session and explained how steady deep breathing is essential. She also made sure that everyone was comfortable and working at their own pace. It provided a peaceful moment and a chance to step away from the chaos of everyone’s lives. This moment also ensured the continuation of themes like self care and empowerment.
With a renewed sense of peace and relaxation, the night continued with pizza and a screening of Legally Blonde, a film which captures the essence of girl power and confidence. Laughter and conversation filled the room as the girls ended the night with a smile on their faces. VOW really took Girls Night In to a whole new level!
