Snow and extreme cold weather caused several school closures at Saint Ignatius College Prep including a cold day on January 23, canceling classes for students and staff and disrupting normal student routines. The dangerous temperatures made travel unsafe, leading administrators to close the building. While many students welcomed the unexpected time off, the cancellations affected schedules, schoolwork, and after-school activities in different ways.
“I felt relieved because I had a test that day. I was able to get more sleep,” junior Charlie Cali said. Like many students balancing homework and activities, the extra rest felt like a break from a busy week.
With no classes to attend, students used the time to relax and focus on personal activities.
“I slept in until 11:00 a.m., and then I went to the gym to workout. I called some of my friends to hangout too,” Benjamin Grud said. The day off provided time to sleep in, exercise, and socialize.
Academically, the cold day helped students stay ahead of their work. “I had extra time to review work or start other assignments,” Grud explained. The extra time allowed them to study and complete tasks without feeling rushed. However, the closure did interrupt after-school activities. “My swim practice was cancelled so that was annoying. I had to swim by myself instead,” Fallara said. Without the team practice, normal training routines change.
Even with school closed, learning continued outside the classroom as some teachers still assigned work so students could keep up from home.
“One of my teachers assigned a short assignment for the class to do. I also caught up on past work that was due,” Cali said.
“The cold day was a lot of fun and relaxing, but I was ready to get back to school and return to my old routine,” Fallara said.
